Zusammenfassung

In this paper, 12 different common beliefs linked to overtourism are discussed. The “myths” chosen address a set of wrong ideas that are frequently discussed in the media. Concretely, the myth chosen are: overtourism is a new issue affecting destinations, overtourism is the same than exceeding the carrying capacity of a certain space, overtourism is exclusively linked to mass tourism, overtourism equally affects the whole destination, overtourism issues only appear in most visited destinations, overtourism only impacts on tourism and hospitality industry, technology is the solution to overtourism, reducing tourist arrivals solves all issues related to overtourism, overtourism needs to have a counterpart to make it disappear, overtourism is beneficial for tourism and hospitality industry, destinations and researcher can easily detect overtourism, and claiming that responsible tourists cannot negatively impact the destination to generate overtourism-related issues. To discuss these myths, the current research employs a literature review. The paper is divided into 15 different sections. First, the paper is introduced. Afterwards, 12 different section explain why the myths mentioned are completely or partially wrong. Later, the study is concluded with a summary of each myth. Finally, the references used to elaborate this paper are displayed.
